Brief National History
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded February 12, 1909 in response to the race riots in Springfield, IL during 1908. NAACP is the oldest and largest grassroots-based civil rights organization in the United States. Widely recognized for its presence in the courtroom, NAACP battled the "separate, but equal" provision established by the landmark U.S Supreme Court case, Plessy v. Ferguson. Currently, the NAACP strongly advocates for media diversity, civic engagement, economic opportunity, health, and legal justice. For more history, please visit www.naacp.org/pages/naacp-history.
